Jake Bartlett's Ultimate Guide to 3D in After Effects sets out to do exactly what its title promises: take a motion designer who has never touched the z-axis and walk them all the way through to confident 3D camera work, including a Cinema 4D detour. At over five hours across twenty lessons, it is not a quick reference. It is closer to a structured curriculum, and it behaves like one, opening with fundamentals before building toward a full class project and a handful of bonus real-world breakdowns.

What the course actually covers

The early lessons do something a lot of 3D tutorials skip: they explain why After Effects 3D behaves the way it does. The demonstration of rotating a 2D layer on its Y axis until it vanishes, because a flat layer turned edge-on has literally no thickness, is a small moment that does a lot of conceptual work. It reframes everything that follows as "2.5D," which matters later when effects like CC Ball Action or 2D layers sandwiched between 3D ones start producing confusing render order results. That explanation of why a 2D layer between two 3D layers renders incorrectly regardless of its Z position is the kind of practical gotcha that separates someone who has fought with After Effects 3D from someone reciting menu locations.

From there the course methodically works through camera types, contrasting one-node and two-node setups, walking through every field in the camera settings dialog, and spending real time on how millimeter presets change perspective. The demonstration of pushing from a 50mm lens down to 15mm on the same text layer, showing how wide angles introduce edge distortion and give small text a sense of scale, is a legitimately useful visual lesson that a lot of courses gloss over with a single line of text.

The class project, a portion of a lyric video, is where the course earns its runtime. Watching the camera pass built up phrase by phrase, including the null-object rig used to blend a zoom-out into a rising reveal without a visible seam between the two moves, is more valuable than most standalone camera tutorials because it shows the iterative trial-and-error process rather than a finished result. The later real-world examples, including a full breakdown of a concert scene built from flat vector characters spaced out in 3D space, reinforce that depth in After Effects is often more about smart layer placement than complex geometry.

Where it comes up short

The course is honest about its own prerequisites, but that honesty means it genuinely is not for beginners. Basic After Effects operations like adding solids, shape layer contents, or effect controls are assumed knowledge, and viewers without that foundation will lose the thread quickly. The Cinema 4D renderer section near the end, while a useful capstone, moves fast relative to the pacing of the earlier lessons, and the extruded text and depth-map blur workflow assumes comfort with expressions that casual learners may not have.

The course is a strong, honest teaching of a genuinely tricky subject, let down only by its length and its unapologetic assumption that the viewer already knows their way around the software.
