Creating and Selling Your First Product using Printful and Shopify thumbnail

A 67-minute walkthrough of the Printful-to-Shopify pipeline, useful for the setup mechanics but thin on how to actually sell anything.

New to Skillshare? Your first month is free, enough to take this course at no cost.

This course promises to take a beginner from a blank Shopify store to a live, sellable product, and on the narrowest reading of that promise, it delivers. Jessica Johnson walks through the mechanical chain of dropshipping custom merchandise: design a graphic, generate a mockup in Printful, connect Printful to Shopify, and publish the listing. For anyone who has never opened either platform, watching that sequence happen screen by screen removes a real barrier to entry.

What the course actually covers

The middle third is the strongest material. The lessons on creating a T-shirt, mug, and hoodie in Printful's mockup generator show the actual decision points that trip up first-timers: how garment color affects how a graphic reads once printed, why the print-quality indicator matters when resizing artwork on the canvas, and how to duplicate a graphic across both sides of a mug. The lesson on adding a product to Shopify continues that same granularity, covering variant selection, packing slip branding, and how adjusting a profit slider changes the retail price shown to customers. These are the kind of small, concrete details that separate a course made by someone who has actually run the workflow from one assembled from screenshots.

The graphic design lessons are weaker. WordSwag and Canva get a walkthrough of their interfaces, but the actual design thinking, what makes a print-ready graphic work on a garment, how to think about transparent backgrounds and resolution for different product types, is thin. A beginner will know which buttons to click and will need to look elsewhere for taste.

Where it thins out

The final third shifts entirely to two third-party Shopify apps: FAM, an email marketing tool, and Reconvert, a post-purchase upsell app. Both segments read more like sponsored product tours than skill-building lessons, walking through pricing tiers, lifetime deal terms, and install screens in detail that a course about launching a product does not obviously need. Neither app is core to dropshipping through Printful, and the time spent on FAM's stacked-coupon pricing tiers would have been better spent on subjects the course never touches: choosing a profitable niche, pricing a product against competitors, driving initial traffic, or reading Printful's cost breakdown against retail margin with any strategic framing.

That gap is the course's central weakness. It teaches the mechanics of getting a product live, but a live listing with no visitors sells nothing, and the course ends without addressing that problem at all. The title promises selling; what it delivers is closer to listing.

At 67 minutes across fifteen short lessons, the course moves fast, which suits its scope. It is not padded, and nothing feels like filler for its own sake, aside from the app-promotion lessons at the end. For a true beginner who wants to see Printful and Shopify connected and a product pushed live without guessing at menus, it saves real time. For anyone who already knows the platforms and is looking for guidance on turning a listing into revenue, there is little here worth the hour.

The standout

The step-by-step walkthrough of the Printful mockup generator, from choosing a garment brand to checking the print-quality indicator before generating files, is the most immediately actionable segment.

What you will learn

  • How to generate a mockup and print file inside Printful's editor, including checking print quality zones before finalizing a design
  • How to create low-cost graphics with WordSwag ($4.99 iPhone app) and Canva, including setting custom dimensions like 42x36 inches for print files
  • How to connect a Printful account to a Shopify store and push a product through with variants, pricing, and profit margins
  • How to configure Printful packing slips, shipping overrides, and order product samples at a discount
  • How to install and configure the Shopify apps FAM (AI email marketing) and Reconvert (post-purchase upsell page)

Best for: A complete beginner who has never touched Printful or Shopify and just wants to see the account setup and product-upload screens click by click.

Skip it if: Anyone looking for guidance on marketing, pricing strategy, niche selection, or actually driving sales, since the course stops at listing a product and installing two apps.
