What it actually teaches

The course opens with a claim that will either hook a viewer or not: timing and spacing, not keyframe placement, is what separates amateur animation from professional work. Everything that follows is built on that premise. The first substantive lesson uses a simple two-position stick figure to demonstrate that a beginner sets two keyframes and calls it done, while a professional treats every in-between frame as something to shape deliberately. That reframe, animation as the space between A and B rather than the jump from A to B, is the conceptual spine of the whole 309 minutes.

From there the course moves methodically into the After Effects graph editor, splitting it into value graph and speed graph lessons with separate demo files and assignments for each. The teaching method here is concrete: steepness of a bezier handle equals speed, flatness equals stillness, and the shape of the curve tells you the entire motion before you even preview it. That's a genuinely useful mental model, and the course repeats it enough times across different curve shapes that it should stick.

Where the structure holds up

The back half builds outward from that graph literacy into named principles: oscillation (a swinging pendulum losing energy over successive keyframes), anticipation and overshoot (applied to a logo reveal and a mock client project), a full ball bounce breakdown that covers weight, energy loss, and the rule that the angle a ball leaves the ground matches the angle it hit at, and finally squash and stretch, follow through, and secondary animation demonstrated against real reference footage from other studios. Each principle gets an explainer lesson, a live demo, and an assignment, which gives the course a rhythm that actually supports retention rather than just showing off technique.

The final project pulls everything into one illustrated scene where the student is expected to apply the whole checklist, which is a sensible capstone and a legitimate portfolio piece if finished seriously.

Where it falls short

The course is entirely dependent on the After Effects graph editor and keyboard shortcuts, so anyone not already comfortable with basic keyframing, separating dimensions, or navigating the interface will be lost within the first assignment. The Skillshare listing calls it suitable for all levels, but the pacing and vocabulary assume a working animator, not someone opening After Effects for the first time.

There is also a jarring commercial interlude partway through, a pitch for a separate paid membership community, that breaks the instructional flow and reads as an ad dropped into the middle of a lesson sequence rather than course content. The instructor's habit of repeating phrases like "professional animator" and "secrets" as motivational framing gets thin by the halfway mark, and a few lessons lean on live troubleshooting of the instructor's own curve tweaking, which is instructive but occasionally meandering compared to the tighter early lessons.

None of that undercuts the core value. The graph editor lessons alone would justify the runtime for anyone whose animation currently relies on default easing presets.
