## What it actually covers

 Aima Kessy's class opens with a real argument, not just a materials list: traditional color theory, built on an 18th-century red-yellow-blue color wheel, misrepresents how pigments actually behave when mixed. The middle third of the course backs this up with specifics. It explains why cyan, magenta, and yellow produce broader, more saturated mixing ranges than red, yellow, and blue, walks through why red and blue pigments can't mix a truly bright violet (they lack a shared reflectance in the violet wavelengths), and traces the split-primary palette back to a flawed 18th-century assumption about pigment "impurity." This isn't watered-down science communication. It's a genuine attempt to update the mental model most watercolor students are handed by default.

## The project and its limits

 The color recipe book project ties theory to a physical, ongoing reference object rather than a one-off exercise, and the accompanying journal setup (a separate space for messy experimentation versus curated recipes) is a genuinely useful workflow habit independent of the color theory content. The tints/tones/shades exercise and the color-matching drills (paint chips, leaves, photographs) round out the practice with low-stakes repetition designed to build intuition rather than memorized formulas.

 Where the course falls short is depth of guided painting. Most of the runtime is swatch-based experimentation rather than applied composition, and the "Playful Experiments" lesson mostly gestures at painting practice rather than walking through one. At 81 minutes across sixteen lessons, some sections move quickly, particularly the science explanation of cone cells and wavelength absorption, which is accurate but compressed enough that a viewer with zero background in color science may need to rewatch it.

 This is not a class for someone who has never held a watercolor brush. Kessy says as much upfront, pointing newcomers toward a separate essentials class first. It rewards someone who already has basic paint-handling comfort and has hit the specific wall of getting muddy or unpredictable mixtures despite "knowing" the color wheel. For that viewer, the reframing from abstract color relationships to pigment-specific mixing behavior is worth the time, and the recipe book gives the ideas a lasting home rather than letting them evaporate after the last lesson.
